HiSET® Testing

Take classes and earn credits toward completing your high school diploma. HiSET® pre-testing, test-taking strategies and skill building are offered to prepare students for successful completion of the new High School Equivalency Test (HiSET®). The HiSET® has replaced the GED as Maine’s High School Assessment. Students must contact and meet with ABE Coordinator Cathy Renaud prior to starting classes. Please call 892-1819 for an appointment/register for classes.

Kathy Floyd, who has been teaching for the ESOL, HiSET, and high school diploma programs at WRAE since 2009, received the New Teacher of the Year award from the Maine Adult Education Association for the 2009-2010 school year.

Math: Beginning Algebra for High School Completion (HSD and HiSET)

A new class being offered to help high school diploma students earn a math credit and to offer support to HiSET students looking to pass or improve grade on HiSET Math test. This course will cover beginning algebra and provide the foundational skills needed to advance to higher level math classes.

Reading and Writing Essentials for ESOL

Students will practice reading English used in life, for work,

school, and entertainment. The class will also give students

practice writing English paragraphs and essays for formal

correspondence and academic writing. This course is for

ESOL students who tested as high advanced on the CASAS

test (221 or higher). Students must meet with Cathy Renaud

for ESOL placement before the first session. Call 892-1819 to

set up an appointment for pre-testing and placement.

Reading and Writing Foundations for ESOL

Students will practice reading everyday English used in the community, like newspapers, doctor’s instructions, and mail. The class will also give students practice writing basic English sentences and paragraphs in letter writing and

short stories. This course is for ESOL students who tested as high beginner to low intermediate on the CASAS test (200-220). Students must meet with Cathy Renaud for ESOL placement before the first session. Call 892-1819 to set up an appointment for pre-testing and placement.

Reading, Writing and Arithmetic FUNdamentals

Would you like to improve your skills in the 3 R’s? The coursework focuses on Reading (alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension), Writing (sentence, paragraph and short essays or stories) and Arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions and percentages). Classes are offered in a small group setting and will proceed at an individualized pace. Students must meet with ABE Coordinator Cathy Renaud for testing and registration.
